Windsurfing: Kuau Wind Direction: NNE Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Scorchio!!! Sea Temperature: Weather: Sunny spells Max Speed: Distance Covered:
There's been some very weird muggy cloudy rainy weather here in the past
few days. I was expecting today to produce more of the same so it was great
to see sunny skies and plenty of wind. My RRD is visiting the board
repairers :( so I hired a Da Curve 79 twinnie for the day and checked out
Kuau. It was big. The current NW'ly 8-12ft @16secs groundswell was
producing solid mast high sets...hmmm... I was on the brink of whimping out
and scampering off to Kanaha when Pascale turned up and talked me into
giving it a go. Ok...what's the worst that could happen...???
The wind looked solid with the two guys already out were planing on small
sails. So I rigged 4.5, launched, got washed downwind a bit as I took a few
on the head but then planed out back well powered. Then a shower passed
over...and the wind dropped. A lot. I found myself drifting downwind and
having trouble even to waterstart. Those who have sailed Kuau will know
that if you get into difficulties options for coming back in are limited to
say the least. I had to sail downwind to Tavares surf beach, dodge the
rocks there as the shorebreak attempted to destroy my hire board and walk
the 10 minutes back along the road to Kuau to my car. Cock...but could have
been much worse...at least I got in with all kit and body parts intact.
After retrieving my kit from the glares of the local surfers at Tavares I
had a look at Ho'okipa. I was almost tempted into giving it a go but with
the wind still very dodgy and waves still humongous I decided that
discretion was the better part of valour. I feel like a Ho'okipa session is
long overdue though and the swell is forecast to drop off so maybe
tomorrow.
